CAUTIONS AND DISCLAIMER
Blue Stone Naturals Cautions and Disclaimer for use of our body care items and information provided
with these items and on this website (www.BlueStoneNaturals.com)
General Safety Cautions
Every plant and every human body are different. You cannot be sure how your own or another’s body will
react to exposure to materials foreign to it, including pure and natural materials such as essential
oils and other plant derivatives. It is therefore important always to test the application of body
care items in small amounts and on limited areas before full or repeated application. You should
make yourself aware of any indications of irritation or adverse reactions.
In the unlikely event of irritation or adverse reactions, stop application and immediately
remove from your body. Soap and water-soluble substances can be rinsed off or flushed with water.
Oil-soluble substances such as essential oils can be diluted and flushed with a generally non-irritating
fixed oil such as olive oil. If adverse reactions continue after removal seek the assistance of a
trained healthcare provider.
Genuine essential oils are pure and natural, but they are also highly concentrated and potent.
Therefore only small amounts of essential oils should be used at any one time, and they should be
diluted in a non-irritating fixed carrier oil (e.g. olive oil) before being used directly on the body.
Standard dilution is about 3% (or not more than 1 drop of essential oil per 1ml of fixed carrier oil).
Keep out of reach of children.
Essential oils should be kept out of eyes, ears, and the anogenital area. If essential oils do
get into any of these places immediately dilute and flush as described above.
Most aromatherapists, including the International Federation of Aromatherapists, warn that essential
oils are for external use only and should not be ingested unless directed and supervised by a
licensed medical doctor who is also qualified in clinical aromatherapy. If essential oils are ingested
seek medical advice immediately.
Particular care must be taken when using essential oils on individuals who are especially
sensitive, such as the very young, the very old, the frail, pregnant women, those who are
hypersensitive, and anyone under medical care. In all such situations, and in any case of uncertainty,
a trained healthcare provider should be consulted before using essential oils or body care items
containing essential oils.
Each essential oil has its own properties and some have special cautions, so it is important to learn
about any essential oil before use, especially safety precautions.
For example:
Some essential oils, such as Cinnamon (Cinnamomum burmani), Clove Bud (Syzygium aromaticum),
and Lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus) can irritate the skin and should be used in smaller
concentrations than other oils.
Some essential oils, such as Bergamot (Citrus bergamia) and Lemon (Citrus limon) can be
photosensitizing, which means they can render the body more sensitive to the effects of sunlight
(ultraviolet rays). This can result in a faster tanning reaction and the appearance of ‘sun spots’.
It is best to avoid exposure to direct sunlight for a few hours after using these oils directly on the
body.
Some essential oils, such as Himalayan Cedarwood (Cedrus deodara) must not be used during
pregnancy due to heightened risks to the developing baby.
Some essential oils, such as Peppermint (Mentha piperita) must not be used on babies and young
children (under 3 years of age) due to risks of adverse respiratory reactions.
In general, the properties of plants and other natural materials are many and diverse. When used with
proper care and knowledge they can have wonderfully beneficial affects on health and wellbeing. But
they must be used with the appropriate level of respect, responsibility, and caution.
